WASPS: INVERNESS CREATIVE ACADEMY WASPS: PERTH CREATIVE EXCHANGE A project by Wasps Studios, in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council, delivering a fit-for-purpose creative hub for the region. The refurbishment of a 1920's school in Perth city centre has created a modern and flexible facility that includes 26 artist studios, 13 office spaces for creative industries businesses, a gallery and cafe area for the public, meeting facilities and a dedicated teaching space, the Forteviot Charitable Trust Room, for running arts classes and workshops. The building also houses the local Business Gateway service for Perthshire, along with the new Famous Grouse Ideas Centre - an open access facility for creative people and businesses to explore top-end tech including 3D printers, laser cutters, specialist software and virtual reality equipment. FIRE TRAINING CENTRE A major £11m+ project for a local fire authority to deliver a bespoke fire training academy and real-fire/incident command simulation facilities.

SCHOOL UPGRADE PROGRAMME A rolling £17m programme of primary school upgrades to provide mechanical ventilation in schools under an airport flight path. The project aims to improve the quality of the learning environment, by reducing the disruptive noise ingress from flights overhead. The project had a complex group of stakeholders which required careful coordination.

I am a PRINCE2 qualified project manager, and have worked on a wide range of capital projects in the education, local government, arts and heritage sectors.  Recent projects include a £17m programme of school upgrades, £11m fire training centre, £4.5m creative arts facility in Perth, and I am currently working on a £5.7m creative hub/artist studio development in Inverness for Wasps.

Project Website and Blog

Between 2018 and 2021, Wasps is transforming two Category-B Listed buildings to create Inverness Creative Academy – the Highlands’ first major creative hub. The project is being delivered in two phases. Phase 1, the ‘artists and makers’ wing was completed in November 2018. Phase 2 will provide the ‘creative industries’ wing, which we aim to deliver by Spring 2021.

The completed first phase of the building brought the 1913 Arts & Science Extension back into use as the ‘artists and makers’ wing, providing 32 artist’s studios, a community run traditional darkroom, a designated workshop space for classes, and an events/exhibition space in the old gym. This building is now fully let to over 30 Highlands based artists and creatives.

Phase 2 of Inverness Creative Academy is now on site, led by Bancon Construction, and will provide:

• 54 workspaces for creative industries and cultural social enterprises

• Flexible co-working spaces for 26 creatives

• Public exhibition, events and workshop spaces on two levels overlooking the hall

• Fully accessible meeting rooms and facilities for hire

• Public café within the restored, double height, former Assembly Hall
